Laura Mulvey (1975) argued women in the media are used as; ‘Erotic objects of desire for males on screen and in the audience,’ (Mulvey, 1975).
Gauntlett (2002) argues males in the media still follow traditional stereotypes as they are shown as, ‘Alpha males who control the action with violence,’ (Gauntlett, 2002).
Mackillon argues something slightly difference, ‘Males are now shown as sexual objects of desire who are more concerned with image,’ (Mackillon, 2002).
Stanley Hall argues youths are; ‘depressed’ and are likely to seek excitement through; crime, sex, drink/drugs,’ (Hall, 1904).
Dick Hebdige (1988) argued youths are stereotyped as mixed metaphors of; “Youth as fun,” and “Youth as trouble maker.”
Richard Butsch (1992) who says working class males in the media are presented as; "Incompetent and ineffectual, often a buffoon, well-intentioned but dumb. In almost all working-class series, the male is flawed, some more than others..
S.Hall said in 1981, blacks are stereotyped as; "The social problem," (Hall, 1981) and this is a stereotype that has been embraced by Hip-Hop culture.
Malik points out the obvious 1998); “Many feel that Black and Asian audiences are still not sufficiently catered for and that insensitivity towards issues of race and ethnicity still exist. The reality of a lived multiculturalism is not represented in the British media."
Keith Gandal's, in 2007 he said that target audiences are drawn in by the; "Sentimental rags-to-riches story,"
This magazine is aimed for people at the age of 20 to 40 years old. Typically for men and women. Social grade of B. People who would read this magazine would typically be white British. People who read this magazine would possibly be interested in festivals and partying.
Masthead
The masthead of the magazine is very simple and iconic. The word 'MOJO' means a magic spell, talisman or spell. This meaning gives the impression that MOJO promote music and artists that are magical and out of this world. This masthead represents the genre of music that MOJO promote, the title shows that alternative and indie music is out of this world and different. The typography style of the masthead is very simple and iconic so this would attract people that are very simple and like simple things or people that like style and expect a lot from a magazine. The colour of the masthead is very simple and bold. This would attract people who like big and bold things. The colour of the masthead connotes perfection and purity. This colour will attract an audience to the magazine as this colour connotes perfection and purity so people will feel calm around it and will want to read it.
Colour Pallet
The colours used on the cover are mostly red, yellow and white. The colour white connotes perfection and purity, the colour red connotes power, strength and passion and yellow connotes joy and happiness. These colours along with their meanings present the music and artists as powerful, bold and passionate. These colours will attract people to the magazine as people may like thesis colours a lot or because of their meaning and how bold they are on the magazine cover.
Layout
The layout of the magazine is very spaced out and not too cramped in any area of the cover. Everything that is featured on the cover is in their own blocks/columns, for example other people that are featured on the magazine cover are put into a column. This shows that it is very inclusive and professional. This connotes that the content in the magazine is also very professional and detailed so that will also attract an audience who likes to read a lot. This represents that this magazine takes pride in itself meaning it likes to look good and presentable.
Images
The main image is the main attraction and the shot type is a close up shot. It shows the lead singer of the Foo Fighters, Dave Grohl. The mies-en-scene in the main image reveals all, for example the lighting reveals the whole face, as the face is the main image. The facial features are very mutual for example he isn't pulling a face or smiling in the image. The main image may attract an audience to the magazine as the cover has the lead singer of the Foo fighters on it so people who are fans of them will be attracted to the magazine. Other than the main image there is one other image showing a band playing live, this may attract people that like the other band.
Typography
The images featured on the cover may reveal secrets and surprises coming from those bands featured on the cover. The language used on the cover is very revealing and cryptic at the same time so this gets the audience excited. For example this quote shows this "The songs that saved his life." The language is very simple and informal, I think this gives a sense of quality and simplicity throughout the magazine. Also I think that people would appreciate the simplicity of the cover so they have something to look forward to when reading the magazine. The punctuation used on the cover is used in the correct places and makes sentences more professional and makes the magazine look more professional. This may attract an audience as it makes the magazine look professional and people like professional stuff yet simple stuff.
Other Features
Other features such as a bar code and price are featured on the cover however there is no issue number and date.I think people would appreciate it if they included all of those things on the cover so they can keep track and look out for the next magazine. The barcode is unmissable and is placed in a spot where it is away from all main content. For these features to be the size that they are, people can see them properly without them taking over the entire cover of the magazine.
Ive done it!!!!!
